Pipa Pipa Toad

Pipa Pipa Toad

Pipa Pipa Toad

School Programs only

Flat out the coolest toad ever!  This purely aquatic toad looks very strange, but hides his flat body under rocks and logs for protection.  Native to northern South America and southern Central America, this ambush predator eats small fish, crustaceans and bugs. Oddly, they do not have teeth or a tongue.

While very interesting to observe, the pipa pipa does not like to be handled.

*Fun (but gross) fact: The moms carry their eggs on their backs, where the skin grows around the eggs in a honeycomb structure until they are ready to hatch.
