Uromastyx

Uromastyx

Great for all ages.

Commonly called spiny tailed lizards, this amazing lizard comes from southwestern Asia, North Africa, Arabia and the Sahara Desert. They flatten their bodies to wedge themselves between rocks. They also protect themselves from predators by whipping their tails, which are very spiny and sharp. They turn dark when they are cool (to absorb the heat) and brighter yellow when very warm.

Uromastyx are mostly herbivores and are one of the few lizards that don’t eat insects. These desert dwellers survive by not needing to drinking water.

*Fun fact: many scientists believe this lizard might just be the last remaining dinosaur.
